Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Special Learning Disability
Attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) is a disorder that starts in early childhood and can continue throughout life, manifested by excessive activity, impulsiveness, inability to postpone requests (impulsivity), and a permanent and continuous shortness of attention span that are not suitable for the age and developmental level of the person. Today, it is seen in 3-5% of primary school children, that is, in one of every 20-30 children. 80% of children diagnosed with ADHD have these symptoms in adolescence and 30-65% in adulthood. Therefore, ADHD is a problem that concerns children as well as adolescents and adults. It is seen with a frequency of 1-2% among adults. Literally, this consciousness has not settled in our society.
Special Learning Disability is when a child has normal or above-normal intelligence, but performs poorly in listening, thinking, understanding, self-expression, literacy, or math skills compared to their peers and intelligence. It includes subgroups of Reading Disorder, Written Expression Disorder, Mathematics Disorder, and Learning Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Learning disability is a developmental problem. Learning and perception problems begin with the birth of the child. It is not acquired through the educational process. It is a lifelong disorder. Although its incidence in our country is not known exactly, it is seen in 3-10% of school-age children according to various sources.
Even if the children in both groups have normal or even above-normal intelligence levels, they cannot achieve successes that reflect this in their education and face serious problems. In addition to the education of individuals, almost all areas of life such as social relations, daily activities, and occupation can be negatively affected in both disorders.
Parents, teachers and educators who have one-to-one relationships with children and adolescents do not have enough knowledge and experience to recognize individuals with such problems and develop appropriate approaches to them. However, in cases where early diagnosis is made and appropriate treatment and education opportunities are provided, individuals can be successful both in their education and social lives; parents and educators can use safe and appropriate approaches more consciously.
